Who Invented Chocolate Ice Cream

At Baskin Robbins, we’re always jumping ahead of ourselves with Happyness. The first ice cream invented was chocolate ice cream, it even came before vanilla! Chocolate ice cream evolved from the ancient Mexican drink of malted chocolate. During those times, this flavour was limited only to a super-wealthy class of people in the Mayan community. What a crying shame!

When the Spaniards conquered Mexico in 1519, they discovered this sinful chocolate indulgence. It was made of cacao beans, chilli, vanilla and a number of local spices. Very wisely, armed with the inside scoop on achieving divine happyness, they took the drink back to Europe. Legend has it that when Spanish explorer Alberto Garcia first tasted chocolate, he exclaimed ‘In all my time, I have never made a discovery so fine. This is not a taste, it’s an emotion’. Almost 500 years later, his statement still holds true. We, at Baskin Robbins, can confirm it’s an emotion of pure happyness.

Eventually, this drink became a frozen drink which evolved into ice cream. The first frozen chocolate recipe was published in Italy in 1692. It wasn’t until a full century later that ice cream was manufactured in stores and became available to the public. Ice cream then became a symbolic American dessert and became an edible morale symbol in the military. Each branch of the military tried to bring happyness by serving troops with some chocolate scoops!
In 1945 Baskin Robbins was formed and has since been perfecting its chocolate ice cream for decades. Have you tried our Baskin Robbins Mississippi Mud? We’re sure Alberto Garcia would love it!
